Of late you may have drawn the conclusion that I’ve canned crafting in favor of art acquisition. Au contraire, my friends, I was merely pulling wool over your eyes. The only thing that was drawn was the bed curtain, the very spot where each night I’ve shacked up with a pair of needles and giant balls of yarn. I feel sheepish for withholding, but a woman needs her privacy to practice.
The last week was abundantly full of craftercises. The earlier part was saddled by knit wittery as I struggled ardently and sweat profusely to harness the cast on and knit stitch. I kept a hardy laugh on, though, which kept spirits soaring. By mid-week I was rolling rhythmically with my needles, yarn balls flying everywhere. Mercifully, last evening all labors came to a head: I witnessed the birth of a scarflette (small neckwarmer), a gorgeous heathered pacific blue! I cannot wait to take it for a walk, to show all the neighbors a most prized creation.

Somewhere in the middle, I stole time to attend Etsy Lab’s stencil workshop. All participants were asked to bring an item to stencil. Ever the good crafter, I brought a fully stuffed pillow, and to my chagrin was unduly challenged. It ain’t easy, dear readers, to stencil on a rounded surface. Ed Roth, the patient instructor and owner of Brooklyn-based Stencil 1, was equally perplexed by my odd choice of project. But alas, after engaging in a protracted session of pillow talk, we resorted to spray adhesive to get the job done.
Despite the remedy, the adhesive could not withhold the force of my eager brushstrokes nor the bulging pillow. I wound up with a sadly contorted design and the resolve to avoid pillow talk at all costs. I’ll leave it up to the pros.
What nighttime exercises, craft or otherwise, have you been working on?

I’ve been trying to read more at night, but that’s not nearly as artistic or creative :)

I wouldn’t say reading in bed isn’t as creative. It’s the start of a process. If you fill your mind with ideas and the energy to execute them, I’d say reading in bed can be a very strenuous, worthwhile exercise. It’s not quite craftercise, but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt;-)

Hey gal, you thought that you were pulling my leg but actually you got me super interested… if ever you’d want to knit up a piece, I’d be so honored to create an outfit around it. And bien sûr, link to your blog. Qu’est-ce que t’en penses ma belle?
On an other note, I’m so glad to see that you keep on crafting. Passions are there to make our lives worthwhile.

The picture of me in the fabulous pink hat was from a Steeplechase horse race I attended last year. I will probably write a post about it because it was a lot of fun!

Oh, dear. Well, you gave Ed a good challenge.
I haven’t *made* anything in months. Lots of writing, lots of thinking, planning, and scheming, but I need to get my hands on something.
You may have inspired me.

En fait, Susa, il faut que je pratique la technique! Mais, a mon avis, cette une tres bonne idee et ca me donnera le but a travailler rigoureuse. Attends. . .

I LIKE it when you flummox the crafters! Keep thinking outside of the box. (though maybe try it on a pillow cover and then put it over the stuffing?) At night I either sometimes knit – but I taught myself and all I can do is make scarves! So my daughter and I and our friends have about 10 scarves each! I can’t help it – the colors are all so pretty!!! :)

I absolutely plan to make a multitude of scarves, but my real goal and fear is to go beyond that. I’d love to make infant and toddler hats and sweaters for my friends who are now just starting their families.
Would you be willing to do it along with me? I have a neighborhood buddy who has been knitting for 60 years. I made friends with her at the bus stop last week who is willing to show me more difficult techniques(I suggest finding someone, anyone who can be a mentor – don’t be shy). I am absolutely willing to talk through step-by-step how-tos as well as how-not-tos so you can learn from my mistakes.
Let’s keep this near in our future. xx

What a beautifully written post {as always}! Because of you, I have been getting the itch to learn the art of knitting. Unfortunately, I don’t know who would teach me (wish I lived in NYC so I could join the knitting sessions).
This past weekend was spent helping a friend decorate her room. We had multiple crafts going; I will post pictures in a couple of days.
Happy Knitting,
Camberley

Camberley, I’m trying to imagine what crafts you would be doing to decorate a room. In my mind, it would either be extremely tedious and beautiful or easy, but a heinously ugly balloons and streamers situation. I think I need pictures before my mind wanders too far. I look forward to them!
I know this sounds insane, but as I get better I would absolutely answer all your questions. I have found great resources in the city that I could pass onto you. Or I could pass my fails onto you and you could say they’re yours;-) Isn’t that a sweet gesture?

Knitting, knitting, knitting. It’s my favorite thing to do before bed.

Of course you’re a knitter too! I’m glad you do it BEFORE bed because I’m not sure there’s enough room in mine for you. Ah, what the hell, I’ll squeeze you in.

Lydia, I journal. I have a beautiful leather art journal I got in Italy two years ago, and I write in it and do little watercolors. Of course, I will never share these with the world. They are for me alone.

Lydia—your ‘actions speak louder than words’ embroidery comment cracked me up…because I actually did a sampler that said that when i was a little girl!
of course it came in a kit with my american girl doll so I thought it was pretty rad…but now I realize it was my mother’s clever way of getting me to sit still and behave!!
I remember the American Girl sampler as well. I think it was the Samantha Doll who had the task of completing it.
That’s quite a story that you did this very sampler. Do you still have it? This is an important historical document now, so hang on tight to it.

Lydia – I am willing to try if you are … give me a few days to work up my nerve and I’ll try to learn how to purl, okay?
Stephanie @ La Dolce Vita´s last blog ..another place I must see
Stephanie, I only know the knit stitch just yet, so I guess we’ll be learning the purl together. I finished one scarflette but am waiting to figure out how to cast it off. Plus, there’s dropped stitches and I’d like to go back and fix them.
So yes, don’t think you need to be ready today. Let me know when you have all the materials for a scarf and the courage and we’ll start!
